• Hardshell jackets are windproof and waterproof, often made from Gore-Tex or innovative materials like Dynashell. They reliably protect against rain, snow, and strong winds. That makes them the top choice for ski tours, mountaineering, or longer mountain hikes in bad weather.
• Softshell jackets are a great compromise between protection and breathability. They keep out wind and light rain, but they’re a lot more breathable than hardshell jackets. Perfect for intense mountain hikes, ski tours in mild weather, or fast training sessions. At DYNAFIT, you can spot softshell jackets by the functional Dynastretch material.
• Insulation jackets are the way to go when it comes to warmth and comfort. Depending on the model, they come with down filling or synthetic PrimaLoft insulation. They’re perfect as a midlayer under a hardshell or softshell jacket, keeping you extra protected from the cold, wind, and wet.

Hardshell and softshell jackets mainly differ in their material, breathability, and waterproofness. Softshell jackets have a soft outer material, offer more freedom of movement, and are super breathable, making them comfortable during intense mountain sports. On the other hand, hardshell jackets are completely waterproof and reliably protect against rain, snow, and wind, while softshell jackets are just water-repellant. So, hardshell jackets are the better choice in bad weather.

It’s always a good idea to use a layering system under a hardshell jacket. A base layer directly on your skin helps manage moisture, and a midlayer keeps you warm on top of that. In really cold conditions, you can also throw on an insulation jacket. This way, you’ll stay optimally protected even in rain, wind, and snow. A hardshell jacket shouldn’t restrict your freedom of movement and should have enough space to wear additional layers underneath. So trying it on with just a T-shirt isn’t really recommended.
